Custom Questions, Sets, and Sections
As a staffing professional or recruiter using Synergize Driver Recruitment, custom questions (available when you click Manage and then select Custom Questions) allow you to add your own questions to the online driver application. Custom questions consist of the following three (3) components:
-
Sections
-
Sets
-
Questions

Each question is associated with exactly one section. Sections are used to separate questions into different areas on the web form.
Default sections are listed below:
-
Accident
-
Address
-
Education
-
DrivingExperience
-
License
-
Medical
-
Personal
-
PreQualification
-
Violation
-
WorkHistory
The difference between sets and sections is important to understand. When configuring custom questions, a question is assigned to a section and is eligible to appear only within that section on the web form. Each question has a field to assign the section. A section is essentially a named bucket into which related questions are placed.
Conversely, sets are a mechanism for including or excluding questions on a given application type. An application type is assigned a question set. Only when a question is included in a set will the question appear on an application of the specified type. If the question appears, it will be in the section to which the question was assigned.
Example:
Question |
Section |
Contained in Set |
---|---|---|
Q1 |
WorkHistory |
A |
Q2 |
WorkHistory |
A, B |
Q3 |
WorkHistory |
B |
In this case, an application type is configured to use set A. Within that application, Q1 and Q2 appear in the WorkHistory section, but Q3 does not.
For a second application type configured with set B, Q2 and Q3 appear in the WorkHistory section, but not Q1.
Note that section names are not synonymous with tab names. The Work History tab can be completely independent of the section called WorkHistory; however, by choosing such similar names you are obviously implying an association. You assign sections to tabs, so a WorkHistory section appearing on the Work History tab would make sense.
To manage sections, follow these steps:
-
To add a section, click Add and fill in the required information in the pop-up.
-
To edit an existing section, select a section and click the Edit icon.
-
To permanently delete a section, select it and click Delete. Sections cannot be deleted if they are mapped to questions.

Sets are used to configure different custom questions for different application types. Question sets contain a group of questions and are used for a given application type. Each application type can have only one set.
To manage sets, follow these steps:
-
You can add, edit, or delete sets; however, sets cannot be deleted if they are mapped to any application types or business objects.
-
To move questions in and out of a set, click the Manage icon under sets.
-
In edit mode, a question can be added to the set by highlighting the question and using the left arrow to add it to the set.
-
To remove a question from a set, select it and click the right arrow to move it out of the set.
Custom Questions: Questions
There are various question types:
-
Text Answer
-
Yes or No (Radio Buttons)
-
Multiple Choice Exclusive (Drop down)
-
Multiple Choice Inclusive (Check boxes)
-
Date
-
Date Range
-
Rhetorical (No Answer)
Each question type can be marked as required, so that the user must provide an answer in order to submit the form, with the exception of rhetorical questions, which have no answer.
The Yes/No, Multiple Choice Inclusive and Multiple Choice Exclusive question types can also be configured with follow up questions based on a selected answer.
Follow up questions have the same options as regular questions, but the section is inherited from the parent question.
Multiple follow up questions are allowed, for a given answer.
Yes/No, Multiple Choice Inclusive and Multiple Choice Exclusive question types can also be configured with unacceptable answers.
This allows the form to automatically reject drivers who do not meet minimum requirements set by the customer.
As a recruiter, you can:
-
add a new Custom Question by clicking add and filling in the required information.
-
edit an existing Custom Question by selecting a Custom Question and clicking the Edit icon.
-
delete a Custom Question by clicking the delete icon for the question.

To add a custom question for the first time to a new application type, follow these steps:
-
After you set up your driver application, you should have at least an empty custom question set and a no-action workflow.
-
Create a new Application Type.
-
Complete the Application Type information, including the prerequisite Question Set and Workflow.
-
Click Save.
-
Add a Question Section. This is just a name for a "bucket", into which you can place associated questions.
-
Create your custom question and assign it to a section. Click Save.
-
Include your question in the correct question set. Select Manage Set Questions.
-
Select the question and click the arrow to move it to the included IN set side.
-
Place your question in the correct position on the form. Select your application type and then click the Manage Web Form Tab Configuration icon.
Note that your question section and its custom question appear in a Miscellaneous Questions tab, at the end of the editing panel.
-
Remove the section from the Miscellaneous Questions tab and then add it to the correct tab.
-
If you had already modified the Web Form Tab Configuration, the Miscellaneous Questions section would not appear.
-
If you actually want a Miscellaneous Questions tab, you can edit the tab then remove the specific question section you want to move to another tab.
-
If you don't want a Miscellaneous Questions tab, just delete the entire tab, as shown here.
-
Click Save.
-
-
Go back into Web Form Tab Configuration to add the question to another tab.
-
If you have more edits to complete, use the check mark (OK) icon to apply your changes and continue editing. It is good practice to save regularly when you are doing multiple edits.

Business Objects are the repeatable items within a tab. For example, for work history, a business object would be one of the jobs on the list in the driver work history.
Each Business Object can have a Question Set assigned to it. If this is done, and the section matches the section assigned to the tab, then the question will be repeated for each entry in the list.
For example, each WorkHistory Business Object could have a Yes/No question like "Are references available for this position?".

If you change the custom question set or edit the related custom question, the tabs are reset to the default configuration. This means your custom questions are placed in a tab called Miscellaneous Questions (see earlier steps), and you must revisit the Manage Web Form Tab Configuration, to set up your tabs again.
If you need to reset all the tabs to their default configuration to start from scratch again, click on the Clear All Tabs icon. This will place your custom questions in the Miscellaneous Questions tab (see earlier steps).
