Resolve Legacy Issues with Google Chrome No Longer Supporting Java

Use this article to resolve issues associated with no longer being able to enable Java in Chrome. As a result of decisions by third-party developers to drop support for legacy Java plug-ins, older versions of the Synergize Web Client fail to launch in the Chrome browser with the following error message:

This site uses a plugin (Java) that is unsupported.

The Synergize Web Client uses Java in a browser plug-in. Google has announced that, for security reasons, Chrome will no longer support NPAPI plugins (used by Java as well as other technologies like Microsoft Silverlight and SharePoint links to Word docs). Starting with Chrome version 42.0.2311.90 (April 2015), support for the Java plug-in is disabled by default. Complete removal of support occurred after version 43.

While we are working on a version of Web Client that uses HTML 5 and removes the dependency on Java, we recommend the following solutions (in order of preference):

  • Switch completely from Chrome to Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

  • Use Firefox or Edge just for Synergize Web Client.

  • Use the IE Tab extension for Chrome. This emulator allows you to display web pages using Internet Explorer mode within the Chrome browser. Edge also has an improved IE mode.
